The Kentucky Castle: A Fairytale Stay Near the Bourbon Trail
A castle with a complicated history, a charming present, and rolling Kentucky bluegrass in every direction
Most people driving between Versailles and Lexington have seen it sitting up on the hill and wondered. The stone turrets, the drawbridge, the unmistakable silhouette against the Kentucky sky. The Kentucky Castle is one of those places that demands a second look even before you know the story behind it.
The story, it turns out, is worth knowing.
How a Castle Ended Up in Kentucky
In 1969, real estate developer Rex Martin began construction on the property after he and his wife were inspired by the castles and architecture they encountered traveling through Europe. The plan was ambitious: a full castle-style home on rolling farmland just outside Versailles, Kentucky.
Construction never finished. The Martins divorced in 1975 and left the structure incomplete, where it sat for nearly thirty years as a local curiosity and roadside photo-op for anyone passing through Woodford County.
The property was eventually sold in 2003, and new owners began the work of restoring and completing what had been left behind. A fire in 2004 destroyed much of the interior, but rather than abandoning it, the owners rebuilt. The castle opened its doors to guests for the first time in 2008 and was renamed The Kentucky Castle in 2017. What began as an unfinished dream is now a fully realized boutique hotel, farm-to-table restaurant, and event destination sitting on 110 acres of bluegrass farmland.
It is, in the best possible way, a place that refused to not exist.
The Stay
The vibe of The Kentucky Castle is understated in a way that surprised us. It doesn't overplay the fairytale angle. The property is beautiful and considered, with grounds worth wandering and a quiet that settles around you quickly, but it never feels like a costume. It feels like a place that has earned its character through a long and complicated history and is comfortable enough in that to let it speak for itself.
Dining on property rounded out the stay beautifully. The farm-to-table restaurant draws from the castle's own working farm, and that philosophy comes through in every dish. It is the kind of meal that fits the setting perfectly, grounded, unpretentious, and genuinely excellent.
Worth the Stay?
For a Kentucky getaway, particularly one that pairs well with a Bourbon Trail itinerary, The Kentucky Castle is an easy and enthusiastic yes. It is close enough to Lexington to be accessible and far enough from everything else to feel like a genuine escape.
The history makes it interesting. The grounds make it beautiful. The stay makes it worth it.
