JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn: Desert Done Right

A nearly century-old icon that proves some places only get better with time

There are resorts that feel new and resorts that feel timeless. The JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa is firmly the second kind, and has been since 1936.

Long before Scottsdale became the desert resort destination it is today, the original Camelback Inn was already setting the standard. Nearly a century later, that founding vision still defines the experience. The property has evolved, modernized, and grown, but it hasn't lost what made it iconic in the first place. That's a harder thing to pull off than it sounds.

We stopped here as part of an out west road trip, a mix of camping, open highways, and the occasional stay that reminded us why nice hotels exist. The Camelback Inn was one of those stays.

First Impressions: A Property That Knows What It Is

Arriving at the Camelback Inn, the grounds do the talking. The desert landscaping is lush in that particular Arizona way: saguaros, desert blooms, and mountain views that make the whole property feel like it grew naturally out of the land around it. The scale is generous without feeling sprawling, and the modern desert luxury aesthetic threads through everything without erasing the history beneath it.

This is a place that has had nearly ninety years to get comfortable in its setting. It shows.

The Room and the View

Our room's balcony quickly became a favorite feature, a private perch with desert views that made every morning and evening feel unhurried. The Camelback Inn is the kind of property where the outdoor spaces are just as considered as the interiors, and the balance between the two is exactly right.

After days on the road and nights camping under desert skies, stepping into a thoughtfully designed room with a view like that felt like a genuine reset.

The Pool, the Courts, and Daisy

Our stay was short, but we made the most of it. The pool was the standout: beautiful, well-appointed, and the kind of place you settle into for hours without realizing how much time has passed. A round of tennis rounded out the afternoon in the best possible way.

And Daisy came with us for nearly all of it. As a large-breed dog who travels with us regularly, finding properties that are genuinely welcoming, not just technically pet-friendly, makes all the difference. The Camelback Inn was exactly that. She was welcome everywhere except the pool area, which meant we could enjoy the property together without the constant mental load of figuring out where she was and wasn't allowed.

Dining on Property

Even on a short stay, we made time for a meal on property and it delivered. The Camelback Inn's dining lives up to the rest of the experience, grounded in the same attention to detail that defines the property as a whole. After days of camp cooking on the road, it was a welcome change of pace.

Is It Worth the Stay?

Absolutely. The JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn is one of those rare properties that earns its reputation without resting on it. Whether you're building a full Scottsdale resort stay around it or dropping in mid-road trip like we did, the experience delivers: history, landscape, pool, and all.

For families, couples, pet travelers, and anyone who appreciates a place that has figured out exactly what it is and commits to it fully, the Camelback Inn belongs on your list.
