Glacier National Park: Camping Among the Mountains

The quietest, most peaceful place we've ever woken up

Of all the national parks we visited on our out west road trip, Glacier was my favorite. It wasn't close.

There's something about Glacier National Park that feels genuinely untouched in a way that other parks, beautiful as they are, don't quite match. The mountains are massive and unhurried. The air is different. And if you choose the right campground, the quiet is the kind that actually settles into you rather than just surrounding you.

We chose the right campground.

Two Medicine: Glacier's Best Kept Secret

Two Medicine Campground sits in the southeastern corner of Glacier National Park, which means most visitors heading straight for the park's more famous spots drive right past it. That's their loss and your gain.

Where other parts of Glacier can feel busy at peak summer, Two Medicine feels like a different park entirely. The campground is uncrowded, the pace is unhurried, and the mountain views from the site are the kind that make you stop mid-sentence because something in your peripheral vision just reminded you where you are.

We set up camp with a setup that worked surprisingly well for a family of four: our tent connected directly to the back of our SUV, with the girls sleeping inside the car and Nate, Daisy, and I in the tent. It sounds unconventional, but it meant everyone had their own space, the dog was happy, and nobody had to negotiate over sleeping arrangements. On our last morning, a bighorn sheep wandered through camp completely unbothered, which felt like Glacier's way of sending us off properly.

Going-to-the-Sun Road

No trip to Glacier is complete without driving Going-to-the-Sun Road, and in peak summer it delivers everything the photos promise and then some. The road winds through the heart of the park with views that feel almost unreasonably cinematic: glaciers, waterfalls, sheer cliff faces, and valleys that stretch further than your eyes want to follow.

Plan for it to take longer than you think. You will stop the car. Repeatedly.

Why Glacier Wins

We camped in four national parks on that trip and Glacier was the one that stuck. Not just for the views or the road, but for the particular stillness of Two Medicine at night with the mountains right there and the whole family asleep and nothing anywhere asking anything of you.

If you're planning an out west trip and wondering which parks to prioritize, put Glacier at the top. And when you get there, skip the crowded campgrounds and head to Two Medicine. You won't regret it.
